University of Northern Iowa second year track & field athlete Carter Morton of Jefferson is in first place halfway through the Drake Relays Decathlon in Des Moines. The 2020 Greene County High School grad is the son of Chad and Deb Morton of Jefferson. He won two of Wednesday’s five events and he scored 3,750 points. Jakob Tordsen of Condordia-St. Paul is second at 3,710 and UNI’s Zack Butcher is third at 3,701. There are 11 competitors.

Morton won the high jump at 6′ 8-1/4″ and the long jump at 23′ 4-1/2″. He was fourth in the 400 meter dash in :50.60, fifth in the 100 meter dash at :11.55, and seventh in the shot put at 35′ 8-1/2″. Today’s final five events are the discus throw, 110 meter high hurdles, javelin throw, pole vault and 1,500 meter run.
