A book that was recently published tells the story of a professional and collegiate football coach that grew up in Stuart.

Kevin Carroll is the author of the biography, “Buck Shaw: The Life and Sportsmanship of the Legendary Coach,” which is a story of Lawrence Buck Shaw who grew up in Stuart and then later became a college football player at Notre Dame and a coach at North Carolina State, Nevada, California, Air Force, the San Francisco 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles from 1924-1960. Carroll explains when Shaw lived in Stuart he had limited experience in the game of football.

“Stuart High School did not have football. There had been a fatality several years earlier and they had dropped football for a while and Buck, as a senior, came out and played the game when they brought back football.”

He says that while Shaw was a college coach, he won two Sugar Bowls with Santa Clara in 1936 and 1937 and in the NFL he  won a National Football League Championship with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1960. Carroll adds that Shaw played a huge role in changing the game in the NFL.

“When he first went into the NFL, they were running the straight T and Shaw really got a little better with the passing game and implemented the passing game.”

Shaw was  inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame but has yet to be in the NFL Hall of Fame. The book “Buck Shaw:The Life and Sportsmanship of the Legendary Coach” is on sale at various book stores and  websites.
