Greene County High School qualified three events for the upcoming Drake Relays at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. The high school qualifying list was released on Saturday. Senior Jackson Morton qualified in the 110 meter high hurdles and Morton, freshman Camden Strennen, senior Bryce Stalder, and junior Jesse Miller, qualified the 4 x 100 meter relay. The 4 x 100 is the lone girls’ event with juniors Olivia Shannon, Katrina Heupel, Natalie Heupel, and Bella Schroeder.
Drake Relays determines what high school events they hold and how many qualifiers are in each event and it varies widely. There are 96 4 x 100 meter relays for girls and boys. The Rams go in with the 80th fastest boys’ qualifying time at 44.87 seconds and the girls qualified with the 86th fastest time at :52.73. Both ran those times in good weather at the Carroll Tiger Relays on April 21, the last day for qualifying. Preliminary heats start Saturday at 9:15 a.m. for girls and 9:45 a.m. for boys. The eight fastest qualifiers advance to finals races Saturday afternoon.
Morton is one of just 16 qualifiers in the 110 high hurdles and he enters tied with the eighth fastest qualifying time of 14.82 seconds, below 14.90, which was the Blue Standard, or automatic qualifying time. Morton runs the prelims of the high hurdles race at 8:15 a.m. Friday, April 29. The fastest eight move on to Friday’s final at 10:35 a.m. Friday.
