The Iowa Senate recently passed a bill that financially supports non-profits that offer non-abortion resources.
District 24 Senator Jesse Green says Senate File 2381 would provide $1 million to non-profits for pregnant women who do not want an abortion. He points out the legislation passed with bipartisan support with a couple of Democrats voting with Senate Republicans. Green talks about one caveat with the bill about how the funding would potentially work.
“The vast majority of abortions, it’s proven that women will choose them because they just don’t feel like they have the support. These organizations, they may be faith-based, but if they do provide faith-based counseling to the women that will not be reimbursed by the state.”
Green notes this bill was modeled after the state of Texas passed a similar measure. He says the major expense will be extending Medicaid funding to mothers from two months after they give birth to 12 months. He is uncertain if the House will pass the bill and make it to the governor’s desk before the end of the session.
