Greene County opens its girls and boys soccer seasons tonight at different locations and with different opponents. A change was made around mid-morning to the boys’ action at Boone. The varsity teams will play at 5:30 p.m. due to high winds and the possibility of storms later tonight. Weather permitting, a JV game will follow the varsity.
Coach Maribel Hernandez is a former assistant who is now in her first season as head coach. She inherits a program that is still looking for its first winning season. The Rams went 0-17 last season and have dropped their last 21 matches going back to 2019. There was no 2020 season due to COVID-19. The Rams host Grand View Christian (Des Moines) in Grand Junction, the home field of Greene County. GVC went 5-8 last season and won 10-0 over the Rams in 2021. The varsity match is first at 5:30 p.m. with a shortened JV match to follow.
Coach Carl Behne and assistant Chad Black return eight of 11 starters from last season when the Rams qualified for the 2021 Class 1A State Tournament and went 14-7 overall. They’ll be in Boone tonight with varsity at 5:30 p.m. due to the possibility of high winds and storms. Weather permitting, a JV contest will be held after the varsity match. Boone was 2-14 in 2021 and the Toreadors last winning season came in 2015.
