As Severe Weather Awareness week is in its last day for 2022, flash flooding is the topic being discussed today.

Dallas County Emergency Management Coordinator A.J. Seely says flooding has historically been one of the major causes of weather fatalities. Seelys says it doesn’t take much water to cause issues in a vehicle and flooding is something to be taken seriously.

“It does not take a lot of water to move a car so even though you might think you can get through on the road, always turn around. Everybody always says, ‘Turn around don’t drown,’ that really rings true in a lot of situations. Flooding can move cars easily.”

Seely tells Raccoon Valley Radio another danger of driving over roadways where it has water running over the surface.

“The other thing with flooding, especially over roadways, is you might think the roadway is there but if you can’t see it through the water there is no guarantee that it is going to be and so there has been incidents where people have driven over a flooded roadway thinking that the road was still there and just fallen into a massive hole because of water runoff.”

Seely says if there is a flash flood warning it will give you a notification on your phone to make you aware of rapidly rising water levels in your area.
