A Jefferson man was recently arrested on a warrant for a burglary incident.

According to court documents, a passerby called the law enforcement center at 7:15pm on February 18th about a suspicious individual dressed in black clothing outside the entrance to Bomgaards. Authorities responded and noticed the front entrance door was slid open about one foot. A staff member told law enforcement the night maintenance person may have forgotten to fully close the door and was unaware if anything was missing.

An Iowa State Patrol Trooper had 60-year-old Michael Olson in the patrol vehicle. The Trooper saw Olson in a neighboring business parking lot with the same described clothing from the passerby. When asked why Olson was there, he claimed he was “dumpster diving” and his friend in a car left him. Olson was later released.

During the investigation, it was found that Olson was a former Bomgaards employee and would know that the security cameras weren’t operating and staff stayed in the manager’s office during closing hours and didn’t lock the front entrance until they went home. A DeWalt drill, valued at $300, was found on the west side of the neighboring business where Olson was found. The item wasn’t paid for. 

A warrant was issued for Olson and he was arrested Monday and booked into the Greene County Jail. He was charged with a Class C Felony for second degree burglary and a simple misdemeanor for fifth degree theft.
