The Iowa House and Senate have proposed legislation dealing with transgendered females competing in girls sports.

House District 47 Representative Phil Thompson of Boone says the house bill says any biologically born males are prohibited from competing in high school girls sports. He explains that there hasn’t been any cases of transgendered females participating in girls sports within his own house district, however, there have been testimonials and comments from other girls across the state that have concerns and issues.

“A lot of what we do is proactive and we’ve seen it in other states, and really what it comes down to is fairness, and safety, and common sense for our women’s sports.”

Thompson says they’re concern is transgendered females and not transgendered males competing in boys sports.

“It’s sort of common sense. You can look at empirical data and see that biological males competing in women’s sports in a lot of other states – we haven’t really seen it in Iowa – but a lot of other states we’re seeing the transgendered male to female dominating a lot of sports. We worked really hard for a long time on Title IX and to give women opportunities in college sports. We really think it’s just fair to them to make sure that they are competing with and on a fair playing field.”

The House passed the bill Monday and changed it from its original form by including public and private universities and colleges. The Senate has yet to vote on the bill.
