Dallas Center – Grimes wrestling had three compete in the first day of state wrestling tournament action for 3A in Des Moines. The Mustangs were able to have a pair of wrestlers win in consolation play.
At 132, Logan Gard took on Carter Fecht of Waverly – Shell Rock in the first round, as it was evenly matched through the first two periods with Fecht having a 1-0 lead. In the third period Fecht was able to grab a takedown to pull away as Gard fell 3-0. In the consolation round, he took on Holden Willett of Pleasant Valley and he was able to used a big first period that included two nearfalls and a takedown as well, putting up seven points in the first two minutes and hanging on for a 9-6 victory to move to the second day.
At 152, Jacob Fistler was unable to finish his match against Brennan Amos of Newton, as an injury proved to be too much against Fistler, retiring in the first period and calling it a day, a tough ending to a nice season for Fistler.
Connor Pertzsch was able to put together a nice day at 182, as he had a close match in the first round against Harrison Gibson of Southeast Polk, as Pertzsch was able to grab a first period takedown to get a 2-0 lead. In the third period, Gibson was able to make a comeback putting up three points in the frame and holding off the Pertzsch attack, winning 3-2. Pertzsch had to quickly turn around in consolation round play, and he was able to put up a strong match, winning 10-0 in a major decision over Robert Poynor of Waverly-Shell Rock.
DCG will have Gard and Pertzsch wrestling Friday morning in Des Moines, as they will be wrestling in consolation matches starting at 9 am this morning. Raccoon Valley Radio will have play by play coverage of all of the state wrestling tournament.
