A bill was recently passed through the Iowa House in a bipartisan effort that would make biofuels more accessible at the gas pump.

House District 20 Representative Ray Sorensen explains that this bill makes it so gas stations that have the infrastructure in place to sell E-15, are required to offer it for at least 50-percent of their pumps. Sorensen says this bill helps Iowa farmers.

E-15 fuel is cheaper, cleaner and made right here in Iowa, and we want Iowans to have access to this fuel option at their pump.”

Sorensen tells Raccoon Valley Radio a gas station with many pumping stations should be an easy decision to ask them to carry an E-15 blend. He states a retailer that doesn’t have the necessary infrastructure to carry E-15 can apply for a waiver that excludes them from having to carry the product.

My understanding is that I don’t think it’s a forever waiver, I think it would have to probably be applied for every certain number of years. My guess is five to 10 years.”

The bill passed the house with a vote of 82-10.
