A Churdan man faces a felony charge for allegedly stealing grain.

According to court documents on October 22nd, the victim reported that 58-year-old Richard Sabus had stolen grain from him. Sabus was working as a tractor driver for the victim and the victim said Sabus disappeared for 30 minutes and when he came back to the farm field, the bars to one of the grain carts were bent.

Court documents show another witness said at Sabus’ home there was a semi parked next to the grain bins in a white grain trailer that was attached to the semi with about 500 bushels of corn in it. The witness took samples from the trailer and from the auger below the trailer and provided it to law enforcement on October 27th. On October 26th, Sabus sold 301 bushels of soybeans to a cooperative elevator, in which a sample was also given to authorities. The victim said Sabus did not have soybeans to sell this year.

On October 29th, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office secured a subpoena to the cooperative, where it was confirmed that Sabus had sold the soybeans on October 26th. The samples were later tested and confirmed to be the seeds that were planted and harvested by the victim, which were sold by Sabus. When interviewed by authorities, Sabus denied selling the soybeans and planting the beans and corn seed. Sabus received $3,556 for the soybeans and $3,125 for 500 bushels of corn.

Sabus was arrested last week and was booked into the Greene County Jail. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
