Coach Zach Beekman took a partial squad of wrestlers to Atlantic on Saturday to the Atlantic Rollin Dyer Invitational, named after the former longtime Activities Director. A 16-team event with top 10 rated teams in all three classes of Iowa high school wrestling, the Rams filled just six of the 14 weight classes, finished eleventh, and had no champions.
2021 State Champion McKinley Robbins was the highest finisher for the Rams. He lost a battle of State Champions 3-1 to Underwood’s Gable Porter at 132 lbs. Robbins got on the board first with a second period escape before Porter picked up a takedown for a 2-1 lead, then added a third period escape of his own to round out the scoring. Both are juniors and both have been first and second in their two State Tournament appearances. Porter is ranked first in Class 1A and Robbins is second in 2A at 132. Robbins won a tough semifinals match vs. Sergeant Bluff-Luton senior Noah Parmelee just to get to the finals. Parmelee was undefeated before meeting Robbins and ended in third place.
Sophomore Gavin Scheuermann was third at 152 lbs. Sophomore Broc Hamann placed sixth at 285, while senior Brenner Gallagher was seventh at 138, and freshman Gavyn Winters had an eighth place finish at 106 lbs. Senior Noble Hoyt did not place in the top eight at 170 lbs.
The one and only home action this season for the Rams is this Tuesday in the high school gym in Jefferson. It’s a double-dual with Hawkeye 10 Conference member Harlan Community and Heart of Iowa Activities Conference rival Perry. It’s Senior Night and action begins with the Rams and Cyclones at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Blue Jays and Cyclones. Perry and Greene County will cap off the evening.
