Below freezing temperatures are continuing across west central Iowa and there are some safety reminders for pet owners to be aware of.

Dr. Christy Fields with Companion Veterinary Clinic of Greene County says for outdoor pets make sure they have adequate shelters that protect them from the cold.

“Ideally something that’s big enough for them to stand up, turn around and lay down, but not too big. You want them to be able to control some body heat in there. And also, just get them up off the ground. The ground holds the cold. Blankets are okay, but something that they can borrow into like straw or cedar bedding is even better.”

Dr. Fields advises to make sure your outdoor pet has plenty of fresh water and food that is free from ice and use a warming water dish if possible. She also recommends when it’s brutally cold, especially overnight, consider bringing them indoors for a warmer environment.
