Mental health is more in the forefront of society than perhaps at any other time. Greene County School District Activities Director Todd Gordon recently returned from the National A.D. Convention in Denver, CO, and he talked with Raccoon Valley Radio about the subject of mental health for students in athletics and activities, a topic covered at the convention.
“I use the term education based athletics and activities. It starts with a relationship and as long as we continue to build those relationships and stay in touch with what our kids are felling, what they’re going through. What we may think is not a big deal, may be the entire world to a 14 to 18 year old. We just can’t push that aside and say ‘Well, toughen up. It’ll get better.’ No, we’ve got to be in touch and really be aware of those things and help those kids through some of those times that to them is one of the most important things going on in their world right now. We’ve got to see it from their lense, their point of view and help them out where we can.”
It’s break time now in the Greene County Schools. Practices resume next week with competitions in 2022 starting on Jan. 4 for girls and boys basketball in Webster City and for wrestling in Martensdale, also on Jan. 4.
