Wednesday night’s tornadoes resulted in widespread damage across Greene County.
The National Weather Service confirmed there were three EF-2 tornadoes in Greene County when the tornado warning was issued between 5-6pm. Two of the three followed similar paths. One started southwest of Bayard and traveled 24 miles northeast into Greene County. The second tornado started southwest of Bagley and traveled over 17 miles northeast, also into Greene County. The third tornado started southwest of Paton and traveled 26 miles northeast into Webster County. Each tornado reached top speeds of 120 miles per hour.
Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams said the damage included about 10-15 houses that sustained minor to major damage, along with three to four hog buildings and several outbuildings were destroyed. He pointed out at least two cell towers were destroyed in the storm. Williams said there was also a 20 car train derailment, one mile east of Jefferson.
The tornadoes also brought other kinds of damage including knocked over and snapped power poles, leading to power outages. Alliant Energy and Midland Power Cooperative have been working since Wednesday night to fully restore power. The Greene County Secondary Roads crews also helped remove debris from the county roadways.
