An Indianola man has received a suspended prison sentence from a high speed chase earlier this year in Perry.

Robert James Hugen received a five year suspended prison sentence and two years of probation for the Class D Felony charge for eluding, and also has to pay a $1,025 fine followed by a one year suspended jail sentence and three years probation for the serious misdemeanor charge for operating while under the influence and did receive a $1,250 fine for the charge.

The additional charges of an aggravated misdemeanor for driving while barred and reckless driving were dismissed.

According to the Perry Police Department, an officer saw Hugen make an erratic turn as he was heading west on Willis Avenue this past August, and his vehicle had no license plate on the back. Officers also suspected Hugen may have been intoxicated.

Officers attempted to pull Hugen over, he refused and a chase ensued. Hugen’s vehicle began to speed up near I Court and eventually headed west toward Dawson at speeds of 100-115 miles per hour. Hugen then turned onto P Avenue into Dawson going 84 miles per hour in a 25 mile per hour zone.

Hugen eventually stopped in the road and was arrested.
