The Perry girls and Greene County boys were Heart of Iowa Activities Conference basketball winners in Perry last night on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.

The Jayettes pulled away from an early 7-7 tie en route to a 48-22 victory, dropping the Rams to 1-5 on the season and 0-5 in conference play. The loss was the fifth straight for Coach Tori Ogden’s team while the win stopped Perry’s four-game losing streak and Claire Marbuger’s squad improved to 4-4 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Jayna Kenny had 20 points and Lydia Olejniczak 16. The Jayettes built a 27-9 halftime lead and cruised to their first victory as Heart of Iowa Conference members. The Rams had 10 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocked shots from senior Brianna Habben.

The boys’ game saw Greene County win for the fourth straight game as Coach Chris Nelson’s team improved to 4-2 overall and 4-1 in the HOIAC. The Rams won 60-40 Friday night and all four wins during the streak have been by 12 or more points. The Blue Jays fell to 0-6 and 0-5 in the league. The Rams led 27-15 at intermission, then went up 46-19 in the third quarter before Coach David Morris’ squad cut into the lead and got as close at 48-35 before the Rams won by 20. Jesse Miller had 17 points for Greene County with 16 from Richard Daugherty and 10 by Jackson Morton. Freshman Geren Kenney scored 10 for the Blue Jays.

The Greene County teams are home this afternoon with non-conference Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) in the high school gym in Jefferson at 2 p.m. The girls play first with the boys to follow. The Knights are 2-4 in both girls and boys basketball and both have won their last two on the road vs. Red Oak and Atlantic.
