
More details are being released concerning the amount of damage from Wednesday night’s tornadic activity in Greene County.
Weatherology Meteorologist Mike Carow says there were likely two tornadoes that touched down in Greene County during the tornado warning between 5 and 6pm Wednesday evening, pending the survey that is being conducted by the National Weather Service Thursday. One was located southwest of Jefferson and the other near Dana in northeastern Greene County.
Greene County Sheriff Jack tells Raccoon Valley Radio following the tornadoes, there were about 10-15 houses across the county that sustained minor to major damage, along with three to four hog buildings and several outbuildings were destroyed. He notes at least two cell towers were destroyed in the storm. Williams points out Union Pacific Railroad is continuing to clean up the scene of a 20 car train derailment that is one mile east of Jefferson. However, all tracks are open and trains are functioning again. He adds, they are continuing to assess the amount of damage, but it is concentrated along the path of the tornadoes, with the Paton area being one of the hardest hit locations.

Greene County Engineer Wade Weiss tells Raccoon Valley Radio earlier Thursday morning there were three hard closure areas remaining in the county, where power lines were across the road. One location is along County Road P-14, one is south of Jefferson and the other is west of Spring Lake Park on a gravel road. He says Secondary Roads crews were out until 10pm Wednesday night and have been out since sunrise Thursday. He notes the majority of county roads were passable following Wednesday night’s storm and Thursday debris is being removed from the ditches.
There continues to be several residents without power Thursday morning. Both Midland Power Cooperative and Alliant Energy have crews working on restoring power. Jefferson Police Chief Mark Clouse says Wild Rose Casino in Jefferson is serving as a warming center and those that need medical equipment to be charged. Individuals are asked to enter through the main entrance of the casino where an area has been designated to help those in need.
