In an effort to help those who are celebrating Christmas Day alone or need some additional holiday spirit can enjoy a free meal in Jefferson.
The Jefferson Elks Lodge #2306 is once again hosting its annual Christmas Dinner. Elks member Les Fister says the meal will be served at 4pm on Christmas Day at the Elks Lodge, with the menu to include ham and turkey, along with mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, rolls and homemade pumpkin pie. The ham is donated by Jefferson Fareway, the turkeys are donated by Jefferson Hy-Vee, and the pumpkin pie is prepared by the Jefferson ODES Drove #196.
Fister says this is for anyone who doesn’t have special plans for Christmas and who would like some fellowship. He talks about why they are continuing this kind of holiday tradition.
“It’s just something that we as Elks like to do. We’re a benevolent, protective order of elks and that’s just part of the things we do. There’s always those that are less fortunate than we are (and) we need to help them out the best we can, and Christmas time is a real good time, but we need to remember them everyday of the year too.”
Fister points out meal reservations are required by contacting the Elks Lodge by December 23rd. There are several options for people to be aware of to receive meals. Fister says people can dine-in, otherwise pick-ups will be available, as well as home deliveries. He explains the change for those wanting to pick up their meals.
“This year we’re going to ask them to drive into the alley between us and the telephone company (Jefferson Telecom). And when they pull up out there, we’ll probably have somebody out there watching for them as we usually do. But they can come in from the south if they would, off of Monroe Street.”
Following the meal will be bingo for those who attend the event. Call the Elks Lodge at 515-386-2106. Fister says to leave a message and your reservation will be saved.
