The local non profit organization Panora PETS (Protecting Even the Strays) is advising pet owners to protect them against colder temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service, colder temperatures are approaching this weekend and could get as low as 25 degrees Fahrenheit.  Panora PETS Volunteer Marianne Reeves says keeping an animal indoors as much as possible is the best way to keep them safe. Reeves explains there are steps to take to keep your pet warm in the cold weather like insulating a dog house with straw and styrofoam in it and also having a heated bowl of water. She states there are serious consequences if there is nothing to keep a pet warm in the winter.

A lot of animals depend on that during the winter months in order to, you know, not lose their ears and and their paws over the frostbite and the cold. So winter is rough.”

Reeves also points out a good motto is “if it’s too cold outside for you, it’s probably too cold for your pet.”
