As Iowans prepare to spend time with their loved ones this holiday weekend, there are some food safety tips to be aware of.
According to ISU Extension and Outreach, it is recommended to wash your hands with warm water and soap before touching any food. A raw turkey should not be rinsed or washed because this will cause germs to spread to other utensils and surfaces. Additionally, a raw turkey should not be thawed at room temperature rather a turkey should be thawed by a refrigerator, in a bag with cold water or in a microwave.
When a turkey has been cooked, the thickest part of the turkey should be at 165 degrees Fahrenheit with a thermometer. Leftovers should be divided in smaller portions to allow for faster cooling. For more information visit Iowa Extension & Outreaches tips below.
