The Iowa Department Of Natural Resources reminds the community the importance of salvage tags.

DNR Conservation Officer for Guthrie and Audubon Counties Jeremy King states it is Iowa law that when a motorist hits and kills a dead animal on the road and wants to keep that animal they must contact their local conservation officer. King explains what that process looks like.

“e just show up, give you a tag, and like I said that tag is free, with the bucks though the part is you don’t get to keep (is) the rack. And it is illegal road hit (a) deer or a dead deer and the antlers are still attached to the skull. You have to have a salvage tag.”

He says that a salvage tag means  the person must take the carcass with them.

You must contact either the DNR or the appropriate county sheriff’s office to receive a salvage tag.
