With harvest season going on this fall, a local field agronomist is warning producers and farmers to be cautious on the amount of fertilizer use.

Guthrie County Extension Field Agronomist Mike Witt says the biggest impacts from the transfer from harvest season into growing season will be the cost of fertilizer. He says fertilizer costs have been running two to three times higher than this time last year.

“I would say I’m not an economist but for me the ones I’ve hear is a lot of it has to do with supply chain and supply and demand issues.”

Witt explains the steps a farmer needs to assess.

“What is the amount (fertilizer) need to put on, putting on excess fertilizer and other things is probably not a smart situation if you are going to have a higher cost of production but each field is different and each farmer is different.””

Witt adds if farmers are unsure about how much fertilizer they should use, talk with an  advisor and see what economically makes sense for the upcoming growing season.
