harvest-season-2

Harvest season is underway and it is moving at a quick pace.

Guthrie County Extension Field Agronomist Mike Witt says 80-percent of soybeans and 30-percent of corn has been harvested in Guthrie County. He says that harvesting corn is moving at a fairly rapid pace and soybeans are at an accelerated pace. Witt mentions there are some issues to be aware of.

“Make sure especially in a year where we could have some stock quality issues or we could have some other issues with corn falling down from rootworm damage, in a heavy rootworm year, make sure you get out there and get things harvested as quickly as you can.”

Witt tells Raccoon Valley Radio, the top end of corn yield is 200 bushels per acre and top end for soybean yields range between 60-70 bushels per acre.

According to the Iowa Crop Progress and Condition report from the Iowa Department of Agriculture, farmers had 4.7 suitable field days last week. Statewide, 63-percent of corn and 70-percent of soybeans were rated good to excellent condition.
