The Greene County Board of Supervisors recently approved the redistricting map that will be used for supervisor elections for the next decade.
The Supervisors approved the map that was recommended by the five-person temporary redistricting commission. The selected map adhered to the criteria of the ideal population number of 1,754 with a maximum variation of 17 people, which there was a deviation of less than one-percent overall. The redistricting map was based off of the population change from the 2020 U.S. Census data that showed Greene County’s overall population dropped to 8,771.
Supervisor Chair John Muir explains why the Board felt comfortable with the map that was selected out of five choices.
“The biggest thing was it didn’t upset the apple cart. It’s pretty close to how it was before. We’ve had no outcry to the commission that came up with the plan or us of people being unhappy with the way it was before. The commission that came up with the plan was diverse in political parties and I think they did a great job. (GIS Coordinator) Michelle Fields came up with the map and moving numbers around to get the population distributed evenly. We didn’t see any reason to mess with perfection.”
Muir adds all five supervisor districts didn’t see any major changes as to their locations. The election of supervisors is a plan 2, meaning one person must represent each of the five districts, which are elected at-large.
