Greene County led 47-6 in the second quarter and went on to a 54-6 high school football victory over Shenandoah in Jefferson on Friday night at Linduska Field on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. More than half the game was played with a continuous clock under the 35-point margin rule. Coach Caden Duncan’s team, ranked as high as fourth in the Class 2A polls, has won their last six games, is 6-1 overall, is 4-0 in District 8, and has clinch first place in the district with one week of the regular season remaining. An Oct. 15 trip to Osceola to face Clarke Community is all that’s left before the playoffs begin on Oct. 22.
Clarke was upset by Red Oak on Friday, handing the Indians their second district loss. Clarinda is the only team with one district loss and the Rams will finish in first place regardless of the outcome in Osceola by virtue of the 41-0 victory at Clarinda on Sept. 24. Coach Duncan emphasized the Rams want to go unbeaten in the district and up the winning streak to seven heading into the playoffs, which requires a victory in week eight.
Quarterback Bryce Stalder was responsible for six touchdowns vs. the Mustangs, a feat he also accomplished on Oct. 1 vs. Red Oak. Stalder threw for four TDs and ran for two others. He found Jackson Morton for 71 yards and the first points of the game with 7:16 to play in the opening quarter. The QB then ran for a 10 yard score with 4:08 left in quarter one, and he threw a pass into the end zone to Richard Daugherty covering 18 yards with 3:15 left. Shenandoah scored with no time left on the first quarter clock on a Morgan Cotten run of four yards, which was quickly followed by a Stalder TD run of 67 yards with 10:58 to play in the half. With 9:47 to go before intermission, Stalder and Jesse Miller hooked up for 16 yards and another score. Lamar Anders scored on a run of three yards with 5:49 left in the second quarter, and with 5:06 before halftime, Stalder and Max Riley connected on a TD pass of 19 yards. The only second half points were scored by Patrick Daugherty on a run of eight yards with 5:37 left in the game.
Stalder was 6-11-0 passing for 164 yards and he ran the ball eight times for 128 yards. Greene County had 245 rushing yards on 28 carries and Stalder had all the passing yardage for a total of 409 yards of offense. Morton was the leading receiver with three catches for 111 yards.
Shenandoah had some success throwing the football, but the running game was nonexistent. Sophomore QB Nolan Mount was 18 for 42 through the air for 254 yards, but was intercepted five times. In all, Shen had six turnovers to none for the Rams. Blake Herold caught eight passes for 85 yards.
Intercepting passes were Stalder, Morton, Richard Daugherty, Bradyn Smith, and Gabe Ebersole. Michael Rumley recovered a Mustangs’ fumble. The Rams have now turned the opposition over 21 times in seven games.
The Oct. 15 game at Osceola can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com with kickoff at 7 p.m.
