A company is looking to extend a carbon dioxide pipeline through five Midwest states, including Iowa.
Summit Carbon Solutions has filed a request with the Iowa Utilities Board to build a pipeline through 30 Iowa counties to capture carbon dioxide emissions that are from a number of ethanol plants and transport the liquified substance to North Dakota where it will be then stored “deep underground geologic storage locations.” The project is listed as a hazardous liquid pipeline, as noted in Iowa Code.
Greene County is one of the 30 counties that the pipeline would go through. The topic has been discussed with the County Board of Supervisors from two previous meetings. County Environmental Administrator Chuck Wenthold told the Board at their September 7th meeting that the pipeline would cross several drainage districts and that Louis Dreyfus in Grand Junction was one of the ethanol plants involved in the project.
A public meeting about the proposed project will be held on October 4th at 5pm at the Greene County High School auditorium. Click the link below for more information.
