Former Greene County Middle School

Two housing projects in the Raccoon Valley Radio-listening area are recipients of a statewide program.

The Iowa Economic Development Authority selected the former Greene County Middle School building in Jefferson and a single family project as two of 49 housing projects for a total $29.8 million in Workforce Housing Tax Credits.

The former middle school three-story building was originally constructed in 1921 and is listed as historic with the Iowa Historic Preservation Office. The building is vacant and plans are to convert the three-story facility into 25 apartments, including studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units. Developer Nate Adams says Lang Construction is the contractor for the $6 million project. Workforce Housing Tax Credits is one piece of the finances for the project, which  received $694,343.

The other local recipient was a Panora Single Family Project, which consists of four housing units and was awarded $150,966 through Workforce Housing Tax Credits.

There were 137 applications that requested $85.9 million in tax credits. This program provides tax benefits to developers to create new housing in communities. Click the link below to see the full list.
