September is Suicide Prevention Month and Adair County Health Services is working to bringing awareness to the community.
According to Suicide Awareness Voices of Education suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States for all ages and approximately 130 people die a day from suicide.
Director of Senior Life Solutions in Adair County Dianne Allsup states the warning signs of someone contemplating suicide.
“So there can be a lot of warning signs obviously if someone is depressed, if they have had prior suicide attempts, starting to isolate more, a lot of times the feelings of loss of independence or sense of purpose, if there are family struggles or recent death of a loved one, their having a really tough time adapting to change, sudden personality changes.”
Allsup says asking the person if they are suicidal does not increase the risk of suicide. She advises if they indicate they are suicidal take away objects that could hurt them and contact a mental health professional or doctor.
