In what could easily be described as the most complete game of the season, the Greene County High School football team won 55-0 on Friday night over Des Moines Christian School to begin Class 2A District 8 action. The game took place at DMC in Urbandale at the Lions’ homecoming game and the victory improved Coach Caden Duncan’s team to 3-1 overall while the Lions fell to 1-3. The game was broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.

Senior Jackson Morton had his highest number of carries as a running back this season (8) and he scored four touchdowns on runs of 11, 15, 1 and 26 yards, all in the second half. As a receiver, Morton had four catches for 42 yards. Senior Nathan Black had TD runs of 6 and 2 yards, senior Bryce Stalder had a one yard quarterback sneak, and senior middle linebacker Bradyn Smith picked up a fumble at the Lions’ six yard line and ran it into the end zone.

Greene County’s rushing attack was potent all night with 411 of the Rams’ 462 total yards of offense on the ground, both season bests. In addition to Morton topping the century mark at 114 yards, Black had 86 yards on 16 carries, Stalder ran for  80 on 11 attempts, and junior Patrick Daugherty tallied 78 yards on just four carries.

The defense was just as stout as the offense was prolific. DMC was held to 79 yards of total offense including negative eight rushing yards. The Rams sacked the quarterback a season high nine times and there were 17 plays where Greene County held the Lions to zero or negative yards on the ground.

Junior Richard Daugherty intercepted a DMC pass for his third theft this season. The pick plus the Smith fumble return puts the Rams at 10 times they’ve turned the opponent over while surrendering just four turnovers themselves, all through the air. Scoring defense has also been superb during the Rams’ three game winning streak with two shut outs and just three total points allowed in victories over Perry, Kuemper Catholic (Carroll), and DMC.

Greene County stays on the road next week for a District 8 contest at Clarinda. The Cardinals are also 1-0 in the district after they handled Clarke (Osceola) 40-6 on Friday night. The Sept. 24 contest can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com with kickoff at 7 p.m.
