For those that are planning on going to one of the Guthrie County lakes this Labor Day holiday weekend, there are some safety tips to know.

Iowa Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer for Guthrie County Jeremy King says there are multiple items that a boater should have before getting on the lake. These items include life jackets for everyone in the  boat, a type four throwable for a boat that is 16 inches or longer, accessible and functioning fire extinguisher and registration for the vessel. King adds the last thing they search for.

“Also is children. If they are 13 years of age or younger they are going to also have to wear a life vest on a boat and it has to be buckled up and snapped on.”

Additionally Kings says boaters have to follow the Iowa Observer Law.

“I’m driving a boat. I’m pulling two people on a tube, I have to have a passenger on board that watches those people that are being towed whether it’s skiing, tubing, knee boarding, whatever it is to alert the driver they have fallen.”

Labor Day for most boaters is their last time on the water for the year but Kings says it is always good to remind folks to keep them safe heading into the holiday weekend.
