Now that the new school year is fully underway in Greene County, it’s a good time to review some roadway safety tips for the rural portions of the county.
Sheriff Jack Williams says to be aware of younger, teenage drivers, in different situations.
“So just keep in mind there are some undereducated drivers out there that may not know when to slow down, or to slow up at a crossing that has corn on all four sides (of an intersection). Especially at road crossings where there are kids coming across in town, the crosswalks, just make sure that we’re paying attention to the kids as it seems that most are more intent on their cell phone than actually looking left and right before they cross the road.”
Additionally, Williams advises to slow down and be prepared to stop for school buses en route picking up or dropping off students. He says if a bus has flashing yellow lights, it’s a matter of a few seconds before those turn to red and the stop arm extends away from the bus. He reminds motorists that it is illegal for a vehicle to pass a bus when this happens and the fine is up to $750.
Williams hopes everyone has a safe and fun school year.
