The Perry City Council met in a work session Friday morning to discuss the issue of fireworks in Perry.
Since this past Fourth of July holiday, city officials have received numerous complaints and reports during council meetings regarding the use of fireworks in Perry. Some of the issues discussed included using fireworks outside of the time frame outlined in the ordinance, the constant use of fireworks on the holiday as well as fireworks bothering pets and military veterans across Perry.
Multiple Council members brought up the potential for banning fireworks within the city with an emphasis placed on enforcing the ordinance. The next step of addressing fireworks would be creating a revised draft ordinance for banning the use of fireworks.
Also, the Council discussed moving the sale of fireworks to other districts in the City to make fireworks less convenient for people to purchase.
The current ordinance states that fireworks are only allowed on July 4th from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. and only on the owner’s property or property they have permission to use, and they are not allowed in public places, and you have to pick up after yourself.
No action was taken at the work session but potential action will be on a future regular city council agenda. There will be an open forum at the September 7th and September 20th meetings for people to voice their opinions and concerns.
