With outdoor temperatures being around 90-degrees for the next two days, it’s important to remember to stay hydrated.

Greene County Public Health Director Becky Wolf says an average adult should be consuming 6-8 glasses of water everyday, and that’s without the threat of hotter temperatures. She points out, if your body is exposed to heat, your body will lose more fluid and become dehydrated.

Wolf suggests drinking water before you head outside for the day to allow your body to be hydrated to begin with. She describes her recommendations for once someone is outside in hotter temperatures.

“I would suggest that you start drinking water at least every hour or half hour, have water to drink, that’s your best route. If you drink like pop, or something like ice tea that has caffeine it in, all you’re doing is putting liquid into your body that’s going to be peed out, because caffeine stimulates your kidneys. So you didn’t help yourself any.”

Wolf notes that sports drinks are a good alternative, but water is the best source that your body needs to stay hydrated. She adds to drink beyond the feeling of thirst, because once you become thirsty, your body is starting to become dehydrated.
