As the crop growing season continues throughout the area, the hopes are for more rainfall to be included in the forecast.
According to the latest Iowa Crop Progress and Condition Report for the week of July 26th, there were only 5.9 days of suitable fieldwork due to rainfall. Dallas County Extension Field Agronomist Meaghan Anderson says the rain was needed.
“We keep getting these rainfalls that are not really significant rainfalls for the most part but they are coming at important times to just kind of keep the crop going and we were kind of more than a couple weeks out from a significant rainfall. So it was really getting to the point where we really did need some more of that rain to keep the crop going. I can’t emphasize how important that was that we got that rain.”
Anderson tells Raccoon Valley Radio while there wasn’t a lot of rain earlier this week, it was just enough to keep the crops going. Anderson says more rain is going to be needed throughout the month of August.
“We will need continued rainfall to keep filling grain in both our corn and soybeans at this point in the season.”
According to the crop report, 62-percent of corn is rated good to excellent and 61-percent of soybeans are rated good to excellent.
