Each Olympic year, Jeffersonians with a bit of age to them, may remember back to the Munich Games of 1972 when the late Doreen Wilber of Jefferson won the women’s archery gold medal. Doreen and her husband Paul (Skeeter) spent many years teaching the sport to locals, including Don Orris.

Orris is in his 26th year coaching archery for Gang Greene, the local youth archery club through the City of Jefferson. He told Raccoon Valley Radio that Doreen didn’t always wear shoes. “I always remember going out there when she was teaching me how to shoot and she was barefoot. She was barefoot when she shot, when she practiced, and that way if she missed an arrow, she could feel the arrow easier in the ground to find it!”

He added that Doreen felt among her biggest accomplishments was to give back to archery by teaching the sport to so many over the years. Orris estimates some 600 people have gone through Gang Greene over the years.
