With six seniors in the starting lineup, you had a feeling there would be no panic for Panorama late Saturday night in Carroll. The 3rd ranked Panthers kept their state championship hopes alive by defeating Carroll Kuemper 5-2 in a Class 2A District final. The win pushes Panorama into the substate final Tuesday night against 17-10 Clarinda in Council Bluffs.
Kuemper carried a 2-0 lead into the top of the sixth inning and that’s when Panorama ignited the offense. The Panthers scored a pair of runs off Kuemper starter Austin Tigges to tie the game at 2 heading into the seventh. Jack Weinkoetz delivered a key RBI hit to get the Panthers rolling. The senior left fielder finished the night with three of Panorama’s 10 hits. Panorama saved the best for last scoring three times in the top of the seventh inning. Ryan Klinge was issued a walk and Evan Taylor followed with a hit by pitch. Preston Walker singled to center field to load the bases for Panther star Drew Taylor. The senior pitcher didn’t disappoint lining a single down the right field line brining in both Klinge and Taylor. Domonic Walker added a sacrifice fly giving the Panthers a 5-2 lead.
Bryce Taylor earned the save tossing an eight pitch seventh inning to send Panther fans into a frenzy. Drew Taylor was dominant once again on the mound, allowing just one earned run over six innings while striking 8 Kuemper batters. Taylor picked up the win.
For the second straight season, Panorama will play in the substate final as the Panthers take on Clarinda Tuesday night at Council Bluffs Lewis Central. Clarinda defeated Underwood on the road Saturday night 2-1. You can listen to the game on K 107.
