Two years ago the Greene County High School baseball team upset the top 10 ranked Gilbert Tigers in Gilbert to open the Class 3A postseason. The task is similar when Coach Matt Paulsen’s team opens 3A Substate 8 play against Gilbert in Gilbert tomorrow night. The Rams are 9-14 and have won seven of their last night games. Gilbert was won 11 games in a row and is 21-8 and 16-2 in winning the Raccoon River Activities Conference title.

The Tigers certainly have the advantage on paper with a .300 team batting average and a team earned run average of 2.64 runs per game. In addition, Gilbert is averaging just over 1.5 errors per game.

While Greene County can’t match those numbers, Coach Paulsen’s team has played much better after a 2-12 start to the season. “Our guys are resilient. They’ve weathered the lows and have reached some highs. Our regular season finale on Tuesday with Atlantic is a good example. We trailed 7-0, then tied it at 8-8, fell behind 12-8, and finally won the game 13-12. We’ll keep battling.”

Friday’s game is at 7 p.m. and can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyardio.com.
