The Greene County Rams qualified for Class 1A State Tournaments in both 2019 and this year, the last two times the sport has been played. There were no 2020 high school Spring sports in Iowa due to COVID-19, so the Rams have only had their own soccer program for three seasons and they’ve been State qualifiers the last two.
Head coach Carl Behne and assistant Chad Black saw the 2021 Rams go 14-7 despite the early season loss by top returning scorer Luis Velazco due to a broken leg less than one week into the season. The offense wasn’t as potent, but the defense was stout and Greene County returns some outstanding players next season.
Junior defenders Nathan Black and Brenner Gallagher are as good as a duo at those positions as anyone in 1A, according to Coach Behne. Freshman goalkeeper Gabe Ebersole had just 32 goals allowed in 21 matches. Also back from the starting lineup are freshmen Gesser Aguilar, Jack Hansen, Nathan Behne, along with sophomores Braeden Roberts and Jose Velazco. That’s eight of 11 returning starters, plus some reserves that saw valuable varsity time, not counting what may be in the incoming freshman class. Prospects for boys’ soccer in 2022 at Greene County High School continue to look good.
