As the weather continues to warm up, there are important reminders for staying safe during extreme heat ahead of Iowa Heat Awareness Day.
Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service Chad Hahn says there are things people need to remember when they are out and about during extreme heat this summer including limiting exposure.
“Limit time outdoors. That’s probably number one. If you work outside you need to practice heat safety on job sites (if you’re) doing any sort of exercise outside try to get out before the bulk of the heat is upon us.”
Hahn says people also need to remember when they are in a vehicle if they leave a child in the backseat. Hahn says there are two things people should look out for when it comes to heat and those are heat advisories and excessive heat warnings.
“We will issue those when it exceeds 105 degrees for heat advisories and then if it’s 110 degrees that would be the excessive heat warnings and really those are the days that you just want to stay inside as much as you can.”
Hahn says during extreme heat events it’s also important to check on those in the community who may be more vulnerable. Iowa Heat Awareness Day is scheduled for June 3rd this year.
