May is National Military Appreciation Month, which is a time to reflect and respect each branch of the United States military.

In Greene County, Veterans Affairs Director Michael Bierl says there are over 700 military veterans in the county, ranging from mostly the Vietnam and Korean wars that he has clients from. He reminds everyone of a special local veteran display in the south room of the Greene County Courthouse. Bierl points out there is a permanent display of the namesake for the Jefferson American Legion Post #11 of World War I veteran Floyd Brown. He says there is an additional display for other local veterans

“We also have a rotating one which is available to any veteran who has passed away in Greene County. So we can display that photo. If you have anyone you would like to have on display, let us know and we’ll get that taken care of.”

Bierl talks about what Military Appreciation Month means after the late U.S. Senator John McCain started before he died in 2018.

“It’s a moment to take note of what they all do for us and thank them. So it gives us 30 days to do that and I know people are always thanking them all year round. But this is just an added boost for that.”

Bierl appreciates each branch of the military and those who have served or who are currently serving in those branches.
