With COVID-19 restrictions lifting, that means the return of Memorial Day services in Greene County.
On Memorial Day at 8am will be a mass service at the St. Patrick’s Historical Church, followed by a military service at the church cemetery. There will also be coffee and rolls following the service. Then at 9:30am will be a military service at the Highland Township Cemetery with the Town and Country Band to perform.
There will be two additional Memorial Day services in Jefferson. A blessing of the graves along with the Jefferson Veterans of Foriegn Wars (VFW) and Jefferson American Legion will provide a firing squad and Taps will be performed at 9:30am at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery. Finally, at 10:45am at the Jefferson Municipal Cemetery there will be a flag raising with the Jefferson Fire Department, the benediction will be given by Pastor Chad Cummings, followed by a speech by Greene County Veterans Affairs Director Michael Bierl. The program will conclude with music by the Greene County High School band and military honors with a firing squad by the VFW and American Legion.
Bierl describes his experiences from attending previous Memorial Day services.
“It’s just a solemn event where you know that everyone is on board. It gives you an ora of what people feel in their hearts for the veterans and all (with) emergency personnel, law enforcement, firemen, anyone who’s ever gave their life for the service of our country. So it’s a sobering effect. If you haven’t there to one, you really should check it out.”
All Memorial Day programs are free and open to the public.
