Greene County was a 2-1 winner on Monday over Van Meter in Urbandale at Des Moines Christian High School in a boys’ high school soccer Class 1A Substate 7 semifinal. The Substate 7 final will be against the combined West Central Valley/Nodaway Valley team after they won 1-0 vs. the host DMC Lions in Monday’s second game of a doubleheader.
The Greene County victory improved the Rams to 13-6 while VM ended the season at 9-9. The Rams are 2-0 this season vs. the Bulldogs, both by one goal.
Sophomore Gesser Aguilar scored a pair of first half goals for the Rams and VM’s goal came on a penalty kick with 9:2o left in the match by Will Power. Brenner Gallagher had an assist for the Rams and goalkeeper Gabe Ebersole stopped all nine VM shots from scrimmage.
Greene County is one win away from making it to the State Tournament for the second straight season. Coach Carl Behne’s team has played high school soccer for just three seasons after the pandemic wiped out the 2020 campaign
Game time is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday vs. the combined West Central Valley/Nodaway Valley team and as of early Tuesday morning a site for the Substate 7 final had not been announced.
