Earlier this season the Greene County boys’ high school soccer team was a 1-0 winner over Van Meter in Grand Junction in a regular season contest. The teams meet at 5 p.m. today on the artificial surface in Urbandale at Des Moines Christian’s field with more on the line. Today’s contest is a Class 1A Substate 7 semifinal match with the winner meeting either DMC or West Central Valley/Nodaway Valley in the May 26 Substate 7 final. The team that loses will have its season come to an end.

The Rams are 12-6 and the Bulldogs are 9-8. Coach Carl Behne’s team won 3-1 over Atlantic on Thursday in the opening round of Substate play while VM won its first postseason match by a 5-0 score vs. Panorama.

Senior Alex Roberts leads the Rams in goals scored with 11 and freshman Nathan Behne is the assist leader with 11. Freshman Ben Gordon of VM has seven goals to lead his team. The Rams have shut out seven teams and the Bulldogs have been shut out seven times. Greene County on average scored 2.33 goals and allows 1.55 while VM has averaged 1.52 goals and allowed 1.41 per contest.

There’s also girls Class 2A Regional golf today for Greene County at the Majestic Hills Course at Denison. Host Denison-Schleswig is joined by Greene County, Harlan Community, Bishop Heelan (Sioux City), Carroll High, Gilbert, and Nevada.  Alex Miller has led the Rams in scoring average this season with Brianna Habben next.
