The Greene County School Board met Wednesday night in regular session.
The meeting started with Superintendent Tim Christensen acknowledging National School Board Appreciation Month and handed each board member a certificate. The Board then decided to follow the recommendations by the Iowa Department of Public Health to no longer have to quarantine students, due to possible exposure to COVID-19. Christensen noted that they will continue to do contact tracing, but it is up to the parent whether or not to quarantine their child. Students will continue to be required to wear a mask on buses for the remainder of the year.
The Board then heard an update of programs, positions and other items that the district is targeting to use federal COVID-19 relief funds on, which include nearly 30 different things.
Next, the Board approved three fundraising requests for basketball, volleyball and baseball as presented; transferring $21,915 from the district’s general fund to the student activity fund, as per the directive from Governor Kim Reynolds allowing school districts to supplement their student activity funds because of the negative impacts of COVID-19. Additionally, the Board approved amending its depositories by increasing the Iowa Schools Joint Investment Trust and eliminating UMB Bank as presented.
They also approved an art club trip to Omaha, Nebraska, a band trip to Disney World in 2022-2023, along with a purchasing agreement with Area Education Agency for school food service, a Western Iowa Transit System Service agreement to transport handicapped students, and a North Central Consortium School 28E agreement to transport a couple of students to Manson Northwest Webster. All agreements are for next school year.
Finally, the Board approved the first reading for minor changes to a revised policy for drug and alcohol testing and they tabled their decision on an extra-curricular pay schedule, pending the Board and teacher’s negotiation teams reviewing the schedule and to make a proposal.
