A bill continues to wait for Governor Kim Reynolds’ signature to become law banning showing proof that you are vaccinated against COVID-19 in certain situations.
House District 20 Representative Ray Sorensen says the COVID-19 passport banning bill makes it illegal for a business, governmental entity, including public schools, to require customers or members of the public from showing proof that they are fully vaccinated from the virus. However, the bill doesn’t outlaw employers requiring employees to show proof. Sorensen felt the bill should have banned vaccine proof entirely.
“It makes me a little uncomfortable anytime the government is requiring papers on something that should be protected by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Protection Act). My vaccination records are not your business and your vaccination records are not my business, and I would like to keep it that way. We live in a free country, I would like to continue to keep it free. I don’t think that’s anyone’s business.”
Sorensen says they wanted to address this issue before it becomes a potential problem.
“We have heard from many Iowans that are very concerned about it, yes. I don’t know that it’s actually that they’re having trouble with it, they are just very concerned that something like this is going to happen or that the government is stepping into or getting close to requiring something like this.”
If a business or organization is found in violation of the policy, they may become ineligible for state grants or be denied state contracted work.
