The finishing touches are being installed in a downtown alleyway project in Jefferson.
The north alleyway named “Arch Alley” features three metal arches that artist David Williamson says project different pathways for Jefferson and Greene County.
“So these pathways, both forward and backward in these arches, are reflective of somethings about Jefferson’s history – agriculture, manufacturing – and at the same time moving forward. What’s moving forward in this county? Our kids. Kids are Jefferson and Greene County’s future.”
The three arches depict the different arches found on the buildings around the downtown square, to the children and their future pathways of learning and growing, and finally to the different manufacturing industries within the county. Williamson notes the majority of the materials used to create the arches and the aluminum castings also have historical significance.
“There’s over 50 aluminum castings that go on these sculptures and those clips are all made out of metal from Home State Bank’s remodeling. The huge beams that are the first maybe five-feet of the pair at the north and the pair at the south, those were one large, continuous bean from the Muir (Embroidery) building and (Jefferson City Administrator) Mike Palmer donated that to the project.”
Williamson points out that additional iron was used to extend the arches and create the middle arch from a beam that was from one of the buildings in the north alleyway that used to be a bank. The project is looking to be completed by the scheduled ribbon-cutting event on June 4th.
