West central Iowa experienced snowfall Monday and colder than normal temperatures.

Weatherology Meteorologist Mandy Thalhuber tells Raccoon Valley Radio temperatures will be in the 40s for daytime highs and reach below freezing between Monday and Wednesday. She explains what is causing this brief cold snap.

“What happens is we just have this Canadian cool air mass and then this front that decides to just drive it down. We have a very large temperature gradient on either side of this front. So that’s why we’re also going to have incredibly blustery winds.”

The National Weather Service has also issued a freeze warning for Dallas and Guthrie counties overnight tonight and Thalhuber recommends doing this to prevent certain outdoor items from freezing.

“Just make sure to cover up any sensitive vegetation, crops could have a little bit of damage with this event that we’re going to be experiencing with this cold front over the next several days.”

Thalhuber says the average daytime high for April is 62 degrees and the low is 38 degrees. The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures to get close to average by Thursday.
