Iowa high school track & field athletes will find out soon whether they have qualified for the 111th Drake Relays in Des Moines. Coaches have until late tomorrow night to submit performances to be considered and Greene County is in the running to get several events in, especially on the boys’ side.
Drake sets what events it will hold and how many qualifiers they will accept. The 110 meter high hurdles has 32 qualifiers and Jackson Morton was tied for the 14th fastest time as of late Tuesday on the stats website Varsity Bound. Long jumper Bryce Stalder sat 11th of 24 qualifiers, and Nate Black was in an eight-way tie for tenth in the high jump, which also will have 24 competitors. The Rams’ shuttle hurdle relay sat 14th with Jaxon Warnke, Stalder, Richard Daugherty, and Morton. There are 16 qualifiers in that event.
Greene County girls are on the outside looking in, but they go to LeGrand tomorrow for the East Marshall Invite with a chance to improve performances in the 4 x 100 meter relay, Brianna Osterson in the long jump, and Brooklynn Olson in the shot put. Those three events may need to improve only slightly to make the Drake Relays field.
All high school events at the Relays this year will be on Thursday, April 22. The qualifying list is expected to be announced this Friday.
