The spring sport season is off and running for the Greene County School District.
Activities Director Todd Gordon reflects on not having a spring sport season last year due to the pandemic and shutting down all of the schools after spring break.
“We’ve got a lot of multi-sport athletes but we’ve got some kids that track is their thing, or soccer is their thing, or golf is their thing. So they missed a whole year (and) feel bad for the seniors that didn’t get to compete last year. But we’ve got a group of kids that are really looking forward and have been working hard for the spring season.”
Superintendent Tim Christensen reminds everyone of the district’s adjusted mask matrix, as approved by the school board last month. The matrix was moved from “red” to “yellow” meaning that masks are required when social distancing can’t happen. He urges everyone to continue to make good choices, especially to keep eligibility for spring sports.
“We want to make sure that people are doing what they’re supposed to be doing. Because the last thing that we want is to have kids quarantine, which is going to negatively affect kids in the classroom or that the junior high girls track team has to be quarantined and is going to miss two meets. We want everybody to take that into consideration and do what’s needs to be done so spring sports can have their season.”
Gordon is also relieved to have spring sports be outside to allow for better social distancing and easier ways to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
